LIVE BLOG: October 19, 2016 Presidential Debate

Tonight, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton will face off in the final official presidential debate of the 2016 election.

This debate could prove critical for Trump and Clinton, but even more is at stake for the entire nation. A major misstep by Clinton in this debate could dramatically erode her gains from the last few weeks, whilst a major blunder by Trump could seal Clinton’s victory in November.

I will be live-blogging my reactions to the debate on this post, starting at 9pm EST (6pm PST).

The debate itself is free to watch – a live stream provided by YouTube and NBC is embedded below for your convenience.

And we’re live!

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:06 pm

Supreme Court is the first topic. YES. Good choice, Chris Wallace.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:08 pm

Mrs. Clinton, the Supreme Court doesn’t need to stand on the side of the American people – it needs to stand on the side of the Constitution, the rule of law, and justice.

And for the record, Citizens United was a fantastic decision that upheld First Amendment rights. Roe v. Wade was a bad decision that needs to be reversed, and will someday go down in history alongside Dred v. Scott and Plessy v. Ferguson as some of the worst constitutional cases ever decided.
Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:10 pm

Trump doesn’t think Clinton will win, but the polls show otherwise.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:11 pm

Trump will appoint pro-life justices? Give me a break. He said he would appoint his sister to the Supreme Court. National Review called Trump’s sister “a pro-abortion extremist judge.”

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:12 pm

Clinton supports the Second Amendment? Give me another break.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:13 pm

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:14 pm

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:16 pm

Trump completely dodged a question about his inconsistencies on the Second Amendment.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:16 pm

Trump: “I am pro-life.” LOL.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:18 pm

Trump is unable to unambiguously state that he wants Roe v. Wade overturned, even when pressed multiple times. This guy is not for real. Pro-lifers, research Trump’s background. He’s been virulently pro-choice and supported partial birth abortion, and has only very recently flipped to become pro-life. He’s not reliable or consistent.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:19 pm

Clinton is pro-choice, and y’all know where I stand on that.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:20 pm

Even under Roe v. Wade, states may prohibit partial birth abortions. Clinton would strip the states of that power.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:21 pm

For once, Trump is absolutely right. Partial birth abortion is evil, wicked, and wrong.

The question of the night is whether Trump has supported partial birth abortion before.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:22 pm

ICE has NOT endorsed Trump. He’s still repeating a long-since debunked claim.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:23 pm

Amnesty is NECESSARY. Deportation would destroy our nation’s sagging finances.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:23 pm

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:25 pm

Hillary is 100% right on deportation: it is completely impractical.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:26 pm

Hillary is also for border security – that’s something Trumpers don’t seem to recognize.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:28 pm

Mindlessly repeating the words “wall, wall, wall” doesn’t mean you’re going to be good for border security.

Clinton is much more experienced than Trump on this issue. She is in favor of a secure border. She recognizes that a wall won’t be appropriate across the whole border. She recognizes the value of technology in keeping the border secure.
Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:29 pm

NAFTA was not a bad trade deal. Free trade across the North American continent has been extremely beneficial for all parties involved.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:30 pm

Trump is dead wrong – Clinton is not at all for open borders on immigration.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:31 pm

Trump is right – Clinton improperly pivoted off of immigration onto Wikileaks.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:34 pm

Both sides are getting off good shots on Wikileaks and Russia. They seem about even on this issue.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:35 pm

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:38 pm

You have to feel at least a little bad for the moderators of these debates.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:38 pm

Moving on to the economy…

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:38 pm

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:40 pm

Clinton’s economic plan is very liberal, and appeals well to the Democratic base. In that, she’s doing well.

It makes me go to sleep, though.
Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:42 pm

Trump says he will bring us “a lot of free trade.”

Yeah, right.
Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:43 pm

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:45 pm

Sorry, Clinton, but more government is not the answer for an economic crisis.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:48 pm

Trump is blasting NAFTA. NAFTA has been one of the best things that has happened for our economy in the last century.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:49 pm

Trump is for free trade, but against the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Ahem. One of these things is not like the other.
Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:50 pm

Clinton is absolutely right. Trump’s crocodile tears on trade are incredibly hypocritical when he buys from China and he manufactures in China and Mexico.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:51 pm

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:53 pm

Moving on to “fitness to be president of the United States.”

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:53 pm

The first question is for Trump, on his immorality.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:55 pm

Trump says the accusers’ stories are made up by the Clinton campaign to smear him.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:56 pm

Burned.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:57 pm

Clinton roasted Trump on his sex scandals, and completely destroyed his defenses.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:57 pm

Trump fired good shots at Clinton about the violence at his campaign rallies. Still waiting for her response.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:58 pm

“No one has more respect for women than I do.” — Trump

The audience breaks the rules, and LAUGHS in Donald’s face.
Jeremy Wang October 19, 20166:59 pm

Clinton dodged Trump’s shots about her emails…

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:04 pm

Clinton did well to deflect criticism of the Clinton Foundation onto the Trump Foundation.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:05 pm

Trump’s statement on the Trump Foundation is absolutely false. I can’t wait for a comprehensive fact-check.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:05 pm

Trump did well, asking Clinton why she doesn’t return the money donated to her Foundation by nations like Saudi Arabia and Qatar that discriminate against women. Clinton dodged the question and never answered.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:06 pm

GOLDEN CLINTON STATEMENT: Undocumented immigrants pay more in taxes than Donald Trump.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:06 pm

Clinton did well to attack Trump for failing to release his tax returns.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:08 pm

Let’s be honest – both candidates won, and both candidates lost, the fitness to be president segment because both of them are so unfit.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:08 pm

Trump refuses to say that he will accept the outcome of the election.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:09 pm

Pew Reports?

It’s Pew Research Center, Mr. Trump. incompetency
Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:10 pm

GOLDEN CLINTON QUOTE:

“Whenever something doesn’t go the way Donald wants, he says it’s rigged.”

weretheemmysrigged?
Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:12 pm

Best quote of the night award goes to President Obama, who called Trump a whiner who needs to grow up, and who is unfit to be president.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:15 pm

Trump’s version of ISIS’s history is so revisionist it’s scary.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:15 pm

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:16 pm

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:17 pm

Iran is trying to take over Iraq? I think Trump meant ISIS was trying to take over Iraq. incompetency

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:17 pm

Trump blatantly lied about his support for the Iraq War.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:18 pm

Good shot. Clinton rekt Trump when she said that she was taking out Osama bin Laden while he was still doing Celebrity Apprentice.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:19 pm

Total chaos – moderator, Trump, and Clinton all talking over each other right now.

Trump blames Clinton for Aleppo…

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:24 pm

Good policy-centered question, looking for specifics about Clinton’s no-fly zone. 👏

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:25 pm

Clinton is absolutely right on refugees. We need to thoroughly vet refugees, but we cannot completely stop them from coming in.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:25 pm

“Wait one second” – Trump to the moderator.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:26 pm

Trump is right that we’re being out-played by Putin, Assad, and Iran.

But he doesn’t give any confidence whatsoever that he would do any better.
Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:28 pm

Trump’s statement on the national debt is so nonsensical, it’s sad.

He goes off on a rabbit trail about jobs and trade deals, but completely ignores the actual issue.
Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:29 pm

Clinton is right – Trump is unacceptably narcissistic.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:31 pm

Mrs. Clinton – we can’t simply stop adding to the debt – we need to find ways to affirmatively deal with it, or else the accumulating interest will bury us.

“[Obamacare] will die of its own weight.” — Trump

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:33 pm

Trump’s absolutely right. We need to repeal and replace Obamacare immediately. fullrepeal

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:33 pm

Trump completely dodged Wallace’s question on Social Security and Medicare, though.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:34 pm

Unprepared closing statements. Fun.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:35 pm

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:36 pm

Hillary’s closing statement: more government, more government, more government.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:37 pm

Trump’s closing statement: I am so awesome, I am so very awesome, I am so very EXTREMELY awesome.

Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:42 pm

Initial impression: Trump won the debate, but he lost on the facts.

Trump baited Clinton over and over again. He was clearly in control of the debate tonight. He rattled Clinton, and made her look unsteady. But he did so while making multiple unfactual and illogical statements. Can’t wait to get comprehensive fact-checks tomorrow.
Jeremy Wang October 19, 20167:44 pm

Over and out. Thanks for tuning in! Time to go vote.
